The two things might not be related. Not sure.
Here is code that makes that error not appear anymore - note the careful wording - not saying it fixes whatever the underlaying issue is, but it just fixes the error message literal issue. (ie, now the code only treats it as an array when there is a setting.. but as for why there was no settings (thus returning false, a boolean) that is a separate problem I have no idea.)
